Monsoon Memories

Rains are fascinating. They remind me of a dance recital. With a thunder clap it announces appearance, dazzles us with its scintillating performance and finally after every being in the world in enthralled by its rustic wet charms smilingly bids a colorful rainbow-like farewell.

It’s amazing how the sight of rainfall, fills you with nostalgia, bringing back memories. Memories, which go back to the times, when you were a seven year old; the one who made paper boats and launched them in many rivulets that ran through the backyard, who would read Phantom as Ma brought in hot onion pakodas. These are my memories of the monsoon season. There is of course, the unspoken, silent prayer that please-God-let-tomorrow-be-a-holiday; but inevitably this prayer always went unanswered. Somehow my salutations and respects never appeased the rain God.

Being brought up in a Bengali household, I have been especially fond of food. And the perfect recipe for a rainy afternoon is incomplete without a meal of hot khichudi, with rivers of ghee running through and beguni. Mouth watering right!

For a bookworm like me, nothing beats the combo of a good book teamed up with some good food. And with the monsoon at my doorstep, it’s my favorite time of the year!

  2. Rains are wonderful when you have the luxury of being at home! The khichidi is great – what about pakoras? 🙂

I find myself agreeing with you on that Corinne. Stuck in traffic or stranded anywhere away from strips away the romantic element of rains. And pakoras are the must-have snack during the monsoons. In Bengali cuisine, along with khichidi the usual accompaniment is beguni or eggplant fritters. That’s our crispy pakora 🙂

I love rains only from the comfort of my home. Our desert state can do with second installment of rains again as it has become so hot here now! Pakoras / Maggie with Tea is my favorite rain food 🙂

  7. This brought back a memory of years ago – my son dancing in rain puddles during a heavy rain. And, good food and a good book do make a wonderful combo, rain or not.
